Remembering Don Adis

Don Adis was an inspiration to every MRP participant and volunteer who had the honor and privilege of knowing him. He was always positive, always inquisitive and always kind. He was as real and authentic as a human can be and consistently placed the needs of others above his own. Even though he was our Lead Volunteer and one of MRP’s most generous donors, he would often sleep on the couch at the lodges where we stayed on our rides so that others could enjoy the real beds. He was without a doubt one of the most selfless people to ever walk the planet.

My own relationship with Don was one of the most meaningful relationships I’ve ever had in my life. I met Don just a couple weeks before Relief Ride #1 and he was an invaluable source of help and encouragement on that first ride. Don then went on to volunteer on 17 of the next 18 men’s Relief Rides; the only one he missed was to attend the memorial service of a close friend and fellow Vietnam veteran. Don was like a father to me and I could always turn to him for advice, although he would rarely offer his advice or opinion unsolicited. Don was also one of my best friends with whom I shared countless moments of laughter and ribbing and honest conversation.

Our hearts go out to Kathy, Don’s wife of 49 years who like Don has also given so much of her time and energy to Motorcycle Relief Project. Kathy volunteered countless hours in working with Don to plan meals for the rides, pick up participants at the airport and host many of them in their home before and after each Relief Ride. Kathy has also volunteered as our Donor Care Coordinator since the beginning of MRP, sending hand-written thank you notes to countless MRP donors to express our gratitude for their support. Our hearts also grieve for Don and Kathy’s son Justin, daughter-in-law Tara, and grandchildren Jake and Taylor.

The impact that Don made on Motorcycle Relief Project is immeasurable. He will be missed more than words can express.
